APA Condemns Racism in All Forms, Calls for End to Racial Inequalities in U.S.

In response to the institutional racism, police brutality, and killing of George Floyd brought to the forefront of national discourse, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) issued a statement that it will not stand for racism against Black Americans. Centuries of systemic and institutionalized racism has led to adverse mental and physical health outcomes for Black Americans, which are compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the Black community. Indeed, the APA believes that all forms of racism and racial discrimination affect mental health and negatively impact the nation as a whole, and that racism in all its forms must be fought, while embracing multiculturalism, diversity and greater inclusion. The APA urges anyone suffering trauma because of the death of George Floyd, the ongoing civil unrest in America, or health inequalities to seek psychiatric treatment.
