Highlights from 2023 NEI Congress: Pre-Conference Workshop: Psychedelics

Every year before the official NEI Congress begins, NEI hosts a preconference workshop on a particular topic of interest in psychiatry. Considering that psychedelic medicine has been gaining traction as a viable treatment for mental health disorders, NEI developed this year's preconference workshop to focus on the current landscape of psychedelic medicine. The first talk of this preconference workshop was given by the one-and-only NEI founder, Dr. Stephen Stahl where he discussed the underlying chemistry, pharmacology, and neurobiology of psychedelics, as well as the history of psychedelics in psychiatry and the future of psychedelic medicine. Next, Dr. Roger McIntyre gave an in-depth presentation of the research observing the effects of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of PTSD along with an in-depth look at the research examining the effect of psilocybin-assisted therapy for patients with terminal cancer. For the final talk of this preconference workshop, NEI invited one of the leading researchers in the field of psychedelic-assisted therapy, Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, to discuss the effects of psychedelic-assisted therapy on depression and how psychedelics aid many mental health disorders in the same way. This preconference workshop closed with a riveting discussion by Drs. Stahl, McIntyre, and Carhart-Harris about the future of psychedelic medicine led by questions submitted by the audience.
