2023 NEI Synapse Session Highlight

Biggest Mistakes in Psychopharm
Presented by Thomas L. Schwartz, MD, Manpreet K. Singh, MD, MS, and Andrew J. Cutler, MD

Saturday, April 1, 2023

On Saturday, April 1, we rounded out a fantastic 2023 NEI Synapse meeting with a special “Biggest Mistakes in Psychopharm” session. During this session, Drs. Manpreet Singh, Thomas Schwartz, and Andrew Cutler shared some of the common mistakes mental health care clinicians make in diagnosis and treatment of various mental health conditions and concerns. This gold-star panel of experts also shared some of the mistakes they themselves have made during the course of their careers. Some of the mistakes, or “learning opportunities”, discussed include: under or overdosing a patient; irrational polypharmacy combinations; downplaying or not monitoring side effects; taking patient concerns at face value; failing to provide an accurate differential diagnosis and/or improperly treating movement disorders; discouraging or not providing patient education; and minimizing the importance of a good therapeutic alliance. Drs. Singh, Schwartz, and Cutler also offered strategies to reduce the incidence of mistakes in clinical practice as well as advice on what to do when you’ve made a mistake.
