2022 NEI Congress Session Highlight

This year’s NEI Congress includes the exciting pre-conference workshop on precision psychiatry. Dr. Jeffrey Strawn kicked off the workshop with “Blue Genes: Using Pharmacogenetics to Guide Prescribing,” describing how clinicians can identify patients for whom pharmacogenetic testing can be appropriate, as well as how to interpret pharmacogenetic test results.

Next, Dr. Andrew Cutler presented “Take Two Tablets and Call Me in the Morning: Prescription Digital Therapeutics,” a timely lecture assessing the utility of prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs), a growing treatment option for various mental health problems. Research and development of PDTs is growing and currently there are a few with FDA authorization for treating mental health disorders (Table 1).

Somryst Chronic insomnia
NightWare Traumatic nightmares due to posttraumatic stress disorder
EndeavorRx Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder inattentive and combined presentations

Next, Dr. Jonathan Meyer presented practical and useful knowledge about clinical decision making using pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of antipsychotics, including long-acting injectable formulations. His presentation titled “Pragmatic Precision Psychiatry: Utilizing Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics to Optimize Antipsychotic Treatment,” emphasized that measurement, whether it be antipsychotic drug levels or symptoms, is critical for personalized treatment and to optimize patient outcomes.

Finally, Dr. Manpreet Singh delivered the presentation “Precision Mental Health: Using Biotypes to Personalize Treatment Selection for Mood Disorders,” which demonstrated how neuroimaging can be useful in precision psychiatry. Neuroimaging data may be used to define biotypes, or groups of individuals who have different symptom-linked neural features. Validation of biotypes is ongoing and can likely lead to novel and targeted treatments for patients suffering from psychiatric disorders.
