Taking a Bite Out of Nutrition and Mental Health
Presented by Dr. Andrew J Cutler
|
On Sunday, November 7th Andrew Cutler, MD presented a fascinating lecture on the influence of nutrition on mental health. He presented metabolic contributors to mental illness, along with an examination of the role that inflammation, and specific diets play in mental health. Possible contributors to mental illness are: oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, alterations in the gut microbiota, inflammation, impaired function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, changes in tryptophan-kynurenine metabolism, and epigenetic influences. Dr. Cutler rounded out the presentation with key ingredients (e.g. curcumin, green tea, etc) and diets (e.g. Mediterranean, ketogenic) that result in neurogenesis and reduced oxidative stress and inflammation. An overview of factors known to impact mental health are depicted in Figure 1. |
