Improving the Lives of Patients with PTSD

Trauma can have a profound impact on human physiology from genes to behavior, often leading to psychiatric complications like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This educational program explores how early life adversity and resilience may affect mental health, available and emerging treatments for PTSD, and how healthcare providers can improve the outcomes and quality of life of patients struggling with PTSD.

All sessions will be held in Pacific Time (PT).

Reliving the Past: The Impact of Early Life Adversity on Development of PTSD and Other Mental Health Issues

Sarah Y. Vinson, MD

Early life adversity (ELA), including both abuse and neglect can have lifelong negative consequences to mental health. However, not all individuals who experience ELA go on to develop psychiatric issues (such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and/or depression). In this presentation, Dr. Sarah Vinson will share how ELA can alter the expression of genes, most notably those involved with functioning of the hippocampal-hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal (HHPA) axis, to alter the development and course of PTSD and other mental illnesses. Dr. Vinson will also explore the concept of resilience in the face of adversity, as well as strategies to improve resilience, as it relates to mental illness risk and disease course
