Suicide Prevention: Cross-Diagnostic Strategies in Clinical Care

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, an opportunity to raise awareness and strengthen efforts to help prevent suicide. Education is an essential part of prevention. Greater understanding of suicide risk and warning signs can reduce stigma, encourage open conversations, and help families, schools, workplaces, and communities connect those at risk with professional care.

Mental health professionals play a vital role in this effort. By expanding our knowledge, sharing evidence-based information, and encouraging timely intervention, we can help more people recognize the signs and feel empowered to seek support.

We invite you to join us this November at the 2026 NEI Fall Congress for a CME/CE session presented by Christine Moutier, MD, Chief Medical Officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. You will learn how to identify modifiable drivers and protective factors, treat suicide risk as a distinct clinical target, and engage family and professional supports in prevention and care.

Session Spotlight

"Suicide Prevention: Cross-Diagnostic Strategies in Clinical Care"

Christine Moutier, MD

Christine Moutier, MD

Chief Medical Officer, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

Suicide risk is complex, dynamic, and often clinically modifiable. Dr. Moutier will share practical strategies for assessing and reducing suicide risk across psychiatric diagnoses, including individualized risk formulation, safety planning, lethal means counseling, treatment optimization, crisis response, and timely follow-up.

Clinical Takeaways:

  • Treat suicide risk as its own clinical target, not just a symptom of the primary diagnosis
  • Look past suicidal thoughts to each patient's unique, modifiable risk drivers
  • Pair lethal means counseling and safety planning with timely follow-up
